Identify the layer that failed
The container organizes video, audio, timing and auxiliary streams. The codecs describe how the picture and sound are compressed. A player may recognize the container but reject an enclosed stream; it may also decode a stream but fail to seek through an unsuitable index. Treat these as separate hypotheses.
Before changing anything, save the metadata report and reproduce the error at a specific timestamp. Record the route and selected audio/subtitle tracks so that you can repeat exactly the same test afterward.
Use stream copying when the streams already fit
A remux copies existing encoded streams into a new container. It can avoid another generation of picture compression, but it cannot make an unsupported video codec supported. Some streams also cannot be copied into the chosen destination container. Check the remuxer’s warnings and inspect its resulting stream list.
- Do not overwrite the source file.
- Select only the tracks you intend to test.
- Verify duration, seeking and subtitles in the output.
Re-encode a short sample only when necessary
When the encoded video itself exceeds a verified decoder condition, choose a compatible codec/profile and dimensions in your conversion application. Use a difficult scene containing motion and detail for the trial. Compare quality, audio sync and file size. A successful ten-second opening is not enough evidence for a long recording with variable content.
